District Launches AISD Police Department K-9 Program
Christopher Sayler

Argyle ISD is proud to introduce a new member of our district family: our Argyle ISD Police

Department K-9.

This program reflects our district’s commitment to proactive safety, student well-being, and strong relationships across our campuses. Our K-9 is not a bite or apprehension dog. He is specially trained in narcotics detection and will soon be certified in search and rescue, allowing our Police Department to take a preventative and supportive approach to campus safety.

The purpose of the K-9 program is early intervention, accountability, and care—not enforcement for enforcement’s sake. By identifying concerns early and operating within clear legal and policy guidelines, the program helps maintain safe, welcoming learning environments for students and staff.

What the K-9 Does

  • Assists officers with narcotics detection
  • Supports search and rescue and tracking when needed
  • Conducts open-air sniffs of school property such as lockers, classrooms, vehicles, or unattended items, in accordance with district policy and state law
  • Participates in training exercises, patrols, and educational demonstrations

The K-9 is never used to physically search students and is not involved in routine discipline or minor student issues.

Student & Campus Presence

Families may see the K-9 on campuses throughout the district during patrols, training, special events, or demonstrations. The K-9 is always under the direct supervision of his certified handler, Officer Preston Staber.

When wearing his police vest, the K-9 is working and should not be approached or distracted. When off duty and with handler permission, appropriate interaction may be allowed.

A Positive, Reassuring Presence

Beyond his working role, the K-9 serves as a calm and reassuring presence on campus. Well-trained animals can help reduce anxiety, build trust, and strengthen connections between students and school staff, further supporting a safe and supportive school environment.

Care & Well-Being

The K-9 lives with his handler and is cared for as both a working partner and a valued family member. He receives daily care, ongoing training, and regular veterinary check-ups. His health, safety, and well-being are a top priority.

Naming Our Newest Officer

The K-9 is currently going by the name Stitch, and Argyle ISD looks forward to giving students, staff, and families the opportunity to help select his official name. More information will be shared soon.
