Argyle ISD Board Appoints Sam Slaton to Fill Place 7 Vacancy
Christopher Sayler

The Argyle ISD Board of Trustees has appointed former Trustee Sam Slaton to serve in Place 7 following the resignation of Josh Westrom.

After the vacancy occurred, the Board considered its options under state law, including calling a special election in November, appointing an individual to serve until the May 2027 election, or leaving the position vacant until May 2027. Given the high cost of a special election, the Board chose to consider applicants for an appointment.

The district received numerous applications and expressions of interest from community members, including several former Argyle ISD trustees. Board members met with multiple candidates and expressed appreciation for each applicant's willingness to serve the district and community. The candidates represented a variety of backgrounds and areas across Argyle ISD, reflecting the strong commitment of community members to public education and district leadership.

Throughout the process, the Board carefully considered the responsibility of appointing someone to a position that is typically filled by voters. Ultimately, trustees determined that appointing a former board member would provide continuity and allow the district to benefit from an experienced leader who has already completed required trustee training and can immediately contribute as the new school year begins.

As a result, the Board appointed former Trustee Sam Slaton to serve in Place 7 until the May 2027 election.

Slaton served on the Argyle ISD Board of Trustees from 2017 to 2026, including eight years as Board President. During his tenure, he helped guide the district through a period of significant growth while remaining focused on student success and long-range planning. His knowledge of district operations and governance will provide valuable continuity as the Board continues its work on behalf of students, staff, and the community.

Slaton will be officially sworn into office during a special meeting of the Argyle ISD Board of Trustees on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, at 5 p.m.
